An opening round four under par 68 has Steve Conran well placed to make a run for the NSW Senior Open Championship here at Thurgoona Golf and Country Club.
The Orange-based professional was a model of consistency, carding five birdies against a lone bogey on a morning when the weather was more than a match for several competitors.
“I had eight threes in my card, that was a big help,” A smiling Conron commented post-round.
“I parred all the par threes, which is a good start, and I had four birdies on par fours.
“It’s something I haven’t been going for a while, so I’m happy with that.”
With Several names caught out in the testing conditions, Conran said the shifting winds and storms rolling across the course didn’t affect his composure to a great degree.
“I was hoping for something around a couple under par.
“That’s all I thought I could manage around here on a rainy, windy day. I don’t know how I came up with that, but I did.”
“You could say it was two on the bonus side.”
With Son, James, picking his maiden pro-am win at Waratah on Wednesday, Conran Snr did admit there was a touch of pride mixed with an ounce or two of competitive spirit in today’s solid performance.
“He (James) rings me up straightaway every time he has a good score because he wants to tell me, and he has been going well.
“He didn’t even mention the fact that I was playing golf (this week), so, it’s not like he was trying to one up me or anything,” he grinned.
