Sweet-swinging Richard Green swooped at the critical moment to win a thrilling New South Wales Senior Open at Thurgoona.
The Victorian had never led throughout the 54-hole event, but when his nearest rivals Jason Norris and Andre Stolz fumbled up the last, Green sensationally stood two clear.
Green made six birdies and no bogeys in a stellar closing 66, coming from four behind overnight leader Norris to win the $120,000 event, his first on the Australian Legends Tour.
Norris and Stolz, who had started two behind in second place, traded early birdies and appeared set to turn the event into a two-horse race.
But Green kept nagging away and when, in the group behind him, Stolz bogeyed the 12th and Norris missed out on the reachable par-5 14th then bogeyed the 15th, the Victorian was suddenly a realistic chance.
He blew his approach to the 17th long and into a challenging lie as the pressure mounted, but played the shot of the day to flop within 1m and clean up for par.
Green strode down the last equal with Norris and one clear of Stolz, but then missed his chance to kick clear when his birdie attempt slid by.
But Norris almost simultaneously snapped his 3-wood off the last tee out of bounds and staggered home with a triple-bogey seven.
Stolz had a tough chance to tie with a chip for birdie from the back fringe, but when that came up short, the title was Green’s.
“I didn’t really think too much about it because I thought I might have been a little too far back, but I’m absolutely thrilled to win,” Green said.
